DIY Mosquito Traps for Garden and Home that Really Work

1. Sugar and Yeast Trap

Things You’ll Need:

• 1 Cup of hot water
• 1 gram of yeast
• 1/4 cup of sugar
• A clean, empty 2-liter plastic bottle

Steps to Follow:

1. First, cut the bottle in half around the middle.
2. Heat the water and add sugar to it. Allow the sugar to dissolve in it completely.
3. Once it cools down, pour the mix into the bottom half of the bottle.
4. Add yeast to start the reaction for carbon dioxide.
5. Remove the cap, flip the top part of the bottle upside down, and push it inside the other half to make a funnel.
6. Now, apply tape to the two bottle pieces to put them together.
7. You can also secure a black cloth, paper, or a sock around the trap to increase the effectiveness.
8. Place the trap in a shaded corner of your garden or an isolated corner of your home and watch them drown in this trap and die.
9. Do not forget to empty the bottle every 10-14 days and replace it with a fresh mix if needed.

2. Mosquito Killing Ovitrap

Things You’ll Need:

• A clean, empty plastic container with a pint of yogurt
• Mesh screen
• A drill
• Glue
• Thin-gauge wire
• Old long black sock

Steps to Follow:

1. Drill 2-3 holes big enough to fit in some thin-gauge wire on the opposite sides of a container
2. Then, drill two bigger holes below the hanger holes for drainage. It will stop the water from reaching the screen that traps the mosquitoes.
3. Now, glue the sock’s toe to the bottom part of the container.
4. Once the glue dries up completely, pull the remaining sock up to the edge of the container. It will keep the outside of the container covered and the sock in place.
5. Cut out a fine mesh screen to fit the top of the container and place it at the opening. It should sit above the overflow holes.
6. Feed wire through the smaller holes to make a hanger at the top of the container.
7. Pour some stagnant water into the trap and the sock to moisten it. Stagnant water is a homemade concoction of dog kibble or grass clippings added to fresh water.
8. Now, hang this trap in a shaded place by trees or shrubs. Remember to place it away from sunlight and strong winds or in an empty corner of your home. Refill the container with stagnant water every time you notice the sock drying up.

3. Fan Mosquito Trap

Things You’ll Need:

• Metal-Frame Box Fan
• Metal mesh
• Magnets

Steps to Follow:

1. Rotate the fan to make it blow away the other side.
2. Then, cut out a mesh screen the same size as the fan. Even tulle fabric or mosquito nets will work fine.
3. Press the metal screen against the fan’s face and use magnets to secure it. You can even use duct tape, glue, or zip ties for the same. 
4. Place the fan near such spots with a higher population of mosquitoes and turn it on.

• 1 cup of vinegar
• 1 cup of sugar
• 2 cups of water
• 1-2 liter soda bottle
• 1 or 2 banana peels

Steps to Follow:

1. Use a soda bottle as a container and tie a string to make it easier to hang it from a tree or nail at home. 
2. Mix the vinegar, water, sugar, and banana peels and hang the trap up.

• One teaspoon of regular dish soap

• Fill 1/3 of the container with clean water. 
• Then, add dish soap and mix well.
